ESRIC Summer School goes virtual for its 7th year

The 7th annual ESRIC Summer School took place virtually at the MRC Institute of Genetics and Cancer, University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University 8th – 16th June 2021.

The Summer School brought together 55 students from across the globe for a 10 day long programme that provided them access to state-of-the-art technologies at both campuses and to learn from experts in the field. Both the students and our faculty were teaching remotely so sessions were recorded or repeated to enable our participants in different time-zone to engage with the summer school

The ESRIC organisers took advantage of the brave new world of virtual meetings to try out new formats for the summer school combining lectures from experts in the field with live demos and online workshops. ESRIC organisers been surprised at the positive engagement of our students with the online format and now have ideas for new ways to provide the ESRIC summer schools. Using tools such as Twitter, TeamViewer, Zoom and virtual event platforms we were able to facilitate discussion and debate including a lively Q and A session attended by many of the ESRIC faculty.

The ESRIC summer school is made possible through the support of its speakers, industry partners and sponsors which include the Medical Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Wellcome and the Royal Microscopical Society who co-organised the event for a fourth year running.
