Edinburgh Super-Resolution Imaging Consortium

ESRIC Super-Resolution
Specialist School 2025

Course Description

12th + 14th-16th May 2025 – Heriot-Watt University and University of Edinburgh

The ESRIC Super-Resolution Specialist School is an in-depth course designed to give participants a thorough grounding in super-resolution microscopy. It brings together leading academics and the major suppliers of super-resolution microscopes and analysis software to provide expertise and guidance in the theory, practise and analysis of techniques including structured illumination microscopy (SIM), stimulated emission depletion microscopy (STED), and single molecule localisation microscopies (PALM, sptPALM and dSTORM).  The course is suitable for anyone with prior experience of fluorescence microscopy looking to exploit the benefits of super-resolution.

The Specialist School includes a day of virtual talks covering the theory and background of all major super-resolution techniques and 3 in-person days offering hands-on practical training on ESRIC’s super-resolution systems. Participants can select whether to attend the virtual talks day only or the talks along with 1, 2 or 3 days of workshops.

Course Programme Overview

Monday 12th May (online) – Virtual Talks covering super-resolution techniques including expansion microscopy (ExM), structured illumination microscopy (SIM), stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy and single molecule localisation microscopy (SMLM) and technobites from key suppliers including Bruker, Evident Scientific, and Proteintech.

Wednesday 14th May (in-person at Institute of Genetics and Cancer, University of Edinburgh) – Hands-on workshops on structured illumination microscopy (SIM), super-resolution radial fluctuations (SRRF), and SIM Apotome supported by Nikon, Andor and Zeiss

Thursday 15th May (in-person at Heriot-Watt University) – Hands-on workshops on stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy, STED deconvolution and fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) supported by Leica and SVI

Friday 16th May (in-person at Heriot-Watt University) – Hands-on workshops on single molecule localisation microscopy (SMLM) sample preparation, acquisition and analysis, supported by SVI

Course Fees:

Virtual Talks only: £25

Virtual Talks + 1 day in-person workshops: £100

Virtual Talks + 2 days in-person workshops: £150

Virtual Talks + 3 days in-person workshops: £200

Applications deadline: 28th March 2025

Places for the in-person workshops will be limited, so applications may close early when quota is reached.
